God’s gift is in YOU! Draw it out…through coaching!
“Coaching is a transformative process for personal and professional awareness, discovery, and growth.” ~ International Association of Coaches
When you are coached well, you are forever changed.
With coaching, successful and aspiring leaders make progress and move from where they are to where they purpose to be. It’s powerful, revealing, and FUN!
Why Coaching Works
Try these scenarios on for size:
You want to go back to school to change careers. Your mentor says to stick with the path you’re on. Your teenagers say don’t use up all the college fund money. Your spouse says don’t lose your current income or the family will be bounced out on the street (no pressure). Your mom says ‘there’s always work at the post office’ (thanks, Mom!). What do you think?
You have a spiritual gift that will automatically move you to leadership if it is exercised. Your denomination says women can’t lead in that role. Your husband begs you not to embarrass him—again—by arguing with the pastor about it. Your ministry leaders say ‘quit yer whinin’’ and get in where you fit in—there’s plenty of work for everyone to do. Your kids think you’re terrific in every way and are cheering you on—just like you do for them. Your best girlfriends don’t believe in spiritual gifts and want you to cut it out before they un-invite you to their weekly lunch. How do you feel?
Something’s gotta give. You’re overwhelmed. You have 24 hours in the day, and 25 hours worth of work to do. Your boss says your productivity is great—and wants you to take on three more projects. Your ministry leader has asked you to help with yet another event/project/thingamajiggy. Your daughter has joined another after-school activity, and your son just got a part-time job. Guess who needs rides? Your house is a mess and your mother in law is coming for a visit this weekend. What do you need?
Decisions, decisions. And input? You asked for it, and you got it! They say no. She says maybe. He says yes, and soon. The other ones say forget it. Our side says try something else. Their side says you’ll be sorry. What do you really want?
The good news is that in every case, you have the right answer—right…there.
“Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.” ~ Proverbs 20:5
As the Scripture implies, we have a good sense of the right direction within us. The challenge is the get the good stuff—the GOD stuff—out of the deep and into action.
God created us to be dependent on Him, and interdependent on each other. It becomes really hard to get that ‘deep stuff’ out of ourselves without the help and support of trusted others. People who are expert at drawing out the greatness in others are best for this delicate but essential task!
We may have many people to advise us, but those who love and care about us often have their own agendas. They want specific outcomes and things for us that they see as best–what type of work we should do, what ministry we should be in, what we should wear, what we should do with our money, how we should raise our kids, where we should go with our education, and other stuff about how we should organize our lives. They not only want what’s best for us, but they want us to do things their way! In general, there is nothing wrong with that; but many times, we need to get our own perspective and listen to the still, small Voice Who ministers to us.
In coaching, the agenda belongs to you and to God. As your coach, I partner with you in a process of deep discovery to help you draw out what God has placed in you; and to help you create a safe space to explore that knowledge and the feelings and the action plans that will inevitably come with it. I help you to put your first things first.
That’s why coaching works: it’s all about you, transforming and getting stronger and stronger over time.
There are few places and few relationships where the focus in solely on us and what we need, and coaching is one of those relationships, services, and safe places. The relationship between coach and the person being coached is different from other relationships; and the process of discovery is very different as well.
How Coaching Works
Coaching is about your greatness. It’s about becoming more aware of what is truly possible in your life, what you’d like to accomplish and how. God made you great—now what?
Coaching is WORK! As in athletics or fitness, life coaches help push their clients to higher levels in a faster amount of time than the client may have been able to achieve alone. It is definitely work, but it is not “hard” work in the way we usually think of it.
Coaching is an investment. In order to maximize the return on your coaching investment, it does require energy–using “muscles” of action and analysis that we often don’t allow ourselves to access in our busy lives. Much of the ‘action,’ progress and movement in coaching takes place between sessions.
Coaching is considerate! People who are being coached are investing in themselves, but not solely for their own benefit. They understand that they have a lot to offer, and are committed to giving to others. People will thank you!
Coaching is generous! Participants in coaching want to make sure that they are sharing all of their strengths, talents and gifts in ways that are true to their authentic selves; ways that genuinely give them peace, joy and fulfillment. People will appreciate it, want more, and want the same for themselves!
