Thanks for sharing this exercise! I can see where it will be helpful in finding the exact sticking point in certain areas! And knowing where you need help is a crucial first step!

I had LOTS of fear at one point in my life. Because of Gods word I was able to overcome fear. This is actually how JesusRx got started. I looked up the fear verses and prayed through them almost a year before Jesusrx was a thought. Fear stopped me for awhile and then in the process of overcoming one fear I would find something else to fear...could have been tragic! Writing things down and being honest about how I was feeling was crucial, to admit and give the fear to God was huge in moving on. God knows our fears that's why he tell us NOT TO FEAR he is with us always. The advice on mile markers is great. Now I go straight to my "medicine" for fear when it starts to creep in. Finding out where my belief slacks will be a great way to break through to the next step. thanks

Wow, what an awesome plan. When I did this I realized that I was just a few steps short of reaching my goal. This motivated me to push through the fear and take the steps to achieve the goal.
Thanks for this great post!

Nicole,
What a great exercise! It's really important to make that connection between our belief and our fear. God tells us so many times to "fear not, because I am with you," but it's only in believing that He is with us that we can set the fear aside. Great connections here! Thank you!

Thanks, Nicole. I love how systematic this approach is. For me sometimes, fear is like a free-floating anxiety that is hard to put my finger on - thus it can't be dealt with properly. I like the idea of writing out all the milestones and then asking what my belief is on each one. That will make it much easier to combat Satan's lies with God's truth.

Katie, I'm not sure of the group you're referring to, but I'd like to address the issue of leadership and competency.

I do believe that we still need to discuss leadership. I have said on my blog and on my Blog Talk Radio shows time and time again that we are all leaders; and that leadership is simply exerting influence from wherever our position may be. At any given time, someone is looking to us to lead, whether it be our children, our teammates at work, or members of a group who need us to be successful and contribute to our common goal. To the extent that we are able to (positively) influence others to be more productive, to participate more, to grow in maturity, to make better choices, to use their gifts, to contribute, to agree, etc. speaks to our leadership competence.

The issue on "followership" is that we must always remember that our influence should be to point people toward Jesus, NOT toward ourselves or our own agenda. We should all have the primary goal of following the Lord, not a goal of influencing others to do what we want and to follow us. First followers always keep the Lordship of Jesus Christ in perspective in relationship to our own areas of human influence.

Thanks for your comment.

There seem to a few things to cover here Firstly, there is a whole cevaorsntion to be had about who is a leader and the fact that everyone needs to be a leader from time to time but unless this is a group with which I have worked on a number of sessions in the past, this is probably not the time to to deal with this. Instead, I would be more pragmatic and try to give short quick reasons why it is still important to talk about the leadership competencies. The most straightforward one for me is to explain that focusing on leadership competencies during the action learning session helps us to be be more effective as a group. By choosing to work on specific aspects of our behaviour during the discussion, we will improve our own individual performance which will have the net effect of helping us to work more effectively as a group. I would also stress that because we will all be listening for examples of how other group members are performing against their leadership competencies, it will improve our listening skills and help us to be more constructive and supportive of one another. If it feels like the term leadership competency' is too loaded then I think you could re-position the term as being an interpersonal work competency'. Later on at the end of the session (or when the group next meets and after having had a chat with the sponsor) you could highlight the competencies and use the opportunity to ask questions that help the group understand how those competencies link to leadership and how leadership links to their role.
